Continue to grow your wilderness skills with advanced training, more practice in the field with experienced instructors, and a focus on the applications of nature skills. The Advanced Wilderness Skills Program is for individuals who have completed the Wilderness Certification Program (or an equivalent in-depth training) and are seeking to further develop their skills towards careers.The program focuses on advanced studies and applications of each of our core curriculum areas (survival, tracking, ethnobotany, permaculture, naturalist skills, and outdoor leadership & teaching). Classes include topics such as advanced trailing and tracking, advanced flint-knapping, advanced bow making, and food forest planning. Students also take on individual study projects that are supported through regular check-ins and mentor-ship from staff experts.Class Topics Include:Advanced Survival: Hide-Tanning, Moccasin-Making, Felting, Primitive Pottery, Game Processing, Primitive Fishing Kits, Survival Bedding, etc...
Advanced Ethnobotany: Fermentation, Tule/Cattail Hats, Soap-Making, Medicinal Lotions, Native Plant Propagation & Cultivation, etc...Advanced Tracking: Animal Skull Identification, Advanced Trailing, Live Trapping, Motion Camera Techniques, Wildlife Track Surveys, etc...Advanced Naturalist Skills: Advanced Birding & Bird Language, Taxidermy, Habitat Restoration Projects, Taxonomy, etc...Advanced Permaculture: Food Forest Design, Hedgerows, Surveying, Drafting, Natural Building, Site Installation, Animal Husbandry, etc...Advanced Teaching & Leadership: Community Building, Mentoring, Wilderness Trip Planning, Public Speaking, etc...The Advanced Wilderness Skills Program at a Glance:Location: Based out of our campus in Monroe, WA (in the Seattle / Puget Sound Region) with field trips throughout the Pacific Northwest.Duration: School-year schedule. Meets Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, 9:30am - 3:30pm, with several extended trips during 32 weeks of classes between September and May. Begins September 2014.
Faculty: Alderleaf staff and guest teachers.
Enrollment: Class sizes range from 10 to 20 students.
Tuition: $9500. Tuition covers all instruction and field trips. Financial aid: Scholarships and student loans are available. You can apply for a work-trade scholarship by mailing in a scholarship application along with your program application letter.To Register or Apply: Wilderness Certification Program graduates may register directly into the Advanced Wilderness Skills Program with a $950 deposit. Graduates of equivalent trainings may apply by writing a two-page letter of intent that describes your experience and goals in the program.
